As we start April, the 2024 MLB Amateur draft is just three months away and there’s a new number one prospect. Charlie Condon replaced JJ Wetherholt as the consensus best player and likely top selection by Cleveland in July. Wetherhold dropped to five. In addition, Jac Caglianone stepped up to the second spot with Nick Kurtz dropping to seven. Kurtz has struggled to drive the ball with his average dipping near 0.200. Travis Bazzana holds at three and Chase Burns move up three to the fourth position based on several strong performances in the first month of the season (before facing UNC). For more information on the top prospects, order BA’s 2024 Prospect Handbook.
This composite list is now based on Baseball America, FSS, PBR, The Athletic, Prospect Journal and MyMLBDraft. Perfect Game, CBS, ESPN, MLB.com and Bleacher Report were dropped because they haven’t updated their draft list in the past six weeks. In addition, I tweaked the methodology to have require the players to be on four of the six lists and dropped the lowest ranking.
It continues to be an odd draft overall with weak high school talent and few up-the-middle players in the top 15. For prep players, currently just Konnor Griffen and Bryce Rainer, who jumped on several lists this past month, make the top half. Rainer is the only shortstop to crack the top 15. The only new high school athlete to the list is right-handed pitcher William Schmidt who’s popped into the first round on several mock draft lists. In addition, top pitching is limited to Burns, Smith, Brecht and Santucci.
