Blast Baseball Product Review

Blast Baseball Swing Analyzer is a great product that helps advanced hitters better understand and quantify their swing. It’s a $100-150 knob that attaches to the handle of bats and tracks a player’s bat path. Blast provides key metrics such as barrel speed, attack angle and rotational acceleration. It also creates a visual representation of the path. This feedback allows players to track their progress with the goals of increasing bat speed to ultimately improve exit velocity and being on plane with a pitch to create timely, square contact.

Blast Swing Analyzer breaks down swings into three components – power, contact and consistency. Power includes bat speed and rotational acceleration. Contact captures attack angle and on plane efficiency. Consistency shows early connection and connection at impact. Bat speed, hand speed, attack angle, vertical bat angle, time to contact and power are included without a subscription. Additional metrics require a $8 monthly subscription.

Blast allows player to set their playing level and goals and then offers red, yellow, green feedback about how each swing measured against those goals. For the weaker scoring metrics, Blast offers drills to improve the results. Players can select the metric they’d like to work on and Blast will speak the result after each swing for real-time feedback.

Beyond the metrics and swing profile, the app can be used to video ball flight to estimate exit velocity and distance. The app also includes two games – Home Run Derby and Blast Off – which appear to only be available on iOS.

What’s good about Blast?

  • Easy to understand interface provides real-time feedback about key metrics to improve the swing
  • Simple easy to use technology including a knob stays on well even during game play

What would be improved?

  • The subscription is expensive to get additional metrics. Many players won’t need it
  • Explanations of the metrics can be hard to follow and drills aren’t always helpful
  • Getting ball flight to work can be tricky. It’s challenging in a batting cage due to the limited space for the camera to track the ball off a tee

Over the last couple of years we’ve used Blast, they’ve evolved the app to make it user friendly and to continue to invest in making the product more useful.

Bottomline: Blast is recommended for players 12 and up who are serious about improving their performance. You can buy Blast on Amazon.
