Relative Age Effect in Youth Baseball

The Relative Age Effect (RAE) is prevalent in youth baseball, where older players dominate teams due to advanced maturation. This bias, affecting short-term performance and the Major League Baseball draft, is notably visible in USA Baseball’s talent identification process and National Team selection.

USA Baseball NTIS Process

The Futures Invitational provides entry to the USA Baseball program, but is limited with 16 slots at the 10U level and 24 at the 11U level. Others are evaluated through the National Team Identification Service (NTIS), involving state-wide tryouts, regional Prospect Games, and final selections based on combined metrics and performance notes.
